South Australian builders\u00a0are pleading for\u00a0help from the\u00a0Labor State Government,\u00a0as global instability drives up construction costs and\u00a0fuels\u00a0the state\u2019s housing crisis.\u00a0<\/p>

Gary Holland, Director at Daruma Constructions,\u00a0is among those\u00a0raising the alarm about\u00a0the rising cost\u00a0of\u00a0materials and\u00a0the\u00a0 impact\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0already having\u00a0on the\u00a0price of building a home.\u00a0<\/p>

\u201cI\u2019ve\u00a0received an email from a plumbing contractor to say that the cost of PVC pipe has risen 30% and that this cost will need to be passed on,\u201d\u00a0Mr Holland\u00a0said.\u00a0<\/p>

\u201cUnfortunately,\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0just the start –\u00a0basically any\u00a0material that is being delivered to our building sites\u00a0now comes with a fuel surcharge.\u00a0<\/p>

\u201cIf you\u2019re a South Australian looking to build a modest family\u00a0home right now, then you should expect to pay at least $30,000 more than you would have a few months ago.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>

State Liberal Leader Ashton Hurn said the increases could deter people from building homes at a time when the state is already falling short of its construction targets set under the National Housing Accord.\u00a0<\/p>

\u201cSouth Australia desperately needs more homes built, and we need them built now,\u201d\u00a0Mrs Hurn said.\u00a0<\/p>

\u201cBuilders are being squeezed by rising material and freight costs, at a time when margins are already tight – and ultimately it\u2019s passed on to the client wanting to build their dream home.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>

Shadow Minister for Housing Josh Teague said there are simple steps the government can\u00a0 take to ensure builders\u00a0\u2013\u00a0and their clients\u00a0\u2013\u00a0are protected from enormous price hikes and the threat of business closures.\u00a0<\/p>

\u201cFirst, the State Government should work closely with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) to ensure transparency around pricing,”\u00a0Mr Teague said.\u00a0<\/p>

\u201cIt\u2019s important that any increases across the supply chain are fair and clearly justified.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>

Mrs Hurn also called for payroll tax on apprentices and trainees to be scrapped in June\u2019s State Budget.\u00a0<\/p>
