Breaking into Adelaide\u2019s housing market\u00a0has become a near-impossible task for young buyers, with\u00a0analysis\u00a0by the State Liberals finding\u00a0only\u00a08.8\u00a0per cent of\u00a0homes\u00a0advertised online\u00a0are\u00a0considered\u00a0\u2018affordable\u2019.\u00a0<\/p>

On ABC radio the day before the state election, the Premier said for\u00a0 a person on an average wage, an affordable home would be valued at\u00a0\u201cunder $600,000\u201d\u00a0and that Labor\u2019s policies are aimed at\u00a0\u201cunlocking\u201d\u00a0more of them. (audio here<\/a>)\u00a0<\/p>

A search of the Greater Adelaide region\u00a0on realestate.com.au\u00a0last week found\u00a04,480\u00a0houses, apartments and units\u00a0were on the market, but only\u00a0396\u00a0of those were valued at under $600,000.\u00a0<\/p>

Further to this, the state government\u2019s own affordable housing website,\u00a0HomeSeeker SA<\/a>,\u00a0shows only two\u00a0houses for sale under\u00a0its\u00a0own affordable housing figure.\u00a0<\/p>

State Liberal Leader Ashton Hurn said\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0clear\u00a0more must be done to\u00a0make\u00a0home\u00a0ownership\u00a0\u00a0achievable\u00a0for\u00a0all hard-working\u00a0South Australians.\u00a0<\/p>

\u201cPeople are working their guts out to save a deposit, but they just can\u2019t keep pace with the state\u2019s skyrocketing house prices,\u201d\u00a0Mrs Hurn said.\u00a0<\/p>

\u201cFor too many South Australians, the dream of owning a home is\u00a0 slipping further out of reach.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>

Malvern resident Claire Ahrens,\u00a027, said\u00a0her hopes of\u00a0buying her first home is fading fast\u00a0as affordable listings dry\u00a0up.\u00a0<\/p>

\u201cI have a budget of up to $650,000, and there\u2019s barely anything being advertised in that bracket,\u201d\u00a0Ms Ahrens said.\u00a0<\/p>

\u201cLiving with my parents has helped me save for a deposit, but it feels like prices keep rising faster than I can keep up.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>

Data released by\u00a0Domain<\/a>\u00a0in their 2026\u00a0First Home Buyer Report\u00a0has\u00a0found the cost of an entry-level house in Adelaide is now $720,000, which is an increase of 159 per cent over five years.\u00a0<\/p>

Shadow Housing Minister Josh Teague said the figures showed the housing affordability crisis was worsening under the Malinauskas Government.\u00a0<\/p>

\u201cSouth Australians are being locked out of the housing market at an alarming rate,\u201d\u00a0Mr Teague said.\u00a0<\/p>

\u201cWhen even so-called entry-level homes are costing more than $700,000,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0no wonder young people and\u00a0 families are losing hope of ever owning a home.\u00a0<\/p>

\u201cThe Premier promised to unlock affordable housing, but the reality is there are simply not enough homes available in the price range ordinary South Australians can afford.<\/p>
