Wok the actual duck?
The Malinauskas Labor Government must immediately release its rationale for planning to bulldoze much-loved restaurant Wok the Duck to make way for a new school in Mount Barker, as the sorry situation descends further into a farce.
State Liberal Party Shadow Ministers have been working with Wok the Duck co-owner David Keir since the Government dropped its compulsory acquisition bombshell, and on Monday submitted a Freedom of Information request for full details of the 16 potential site assessments to be made public.
The Shadow Minister for Planning Josh Teague says there’s no reason the Government shouldn’t come clean with the information now.
“What’s to hide?” he asked.
“If the process was thorough and the Wok the Duck site genuinely stands out as the only option, then let us all see why.
“But yet again, instead of transparency, Premier Malinauskas is telling South Australians it’s his way or the highway.
“Well sorry, Mr Premier, but you’ve steamrolled South Australians too many times.”
Shadow Minister for Education Heidi Girolamo welcomed the Premier’s decision to pause the school development, but says consultation on the project should have begun many months ago – not after an announcement has been made.
“Mount Barker desperately needs a new school and it is deeply disappointing that Labor has completely botched the planning process,” Ms Girolamo said.
“We’ve already had timeline blowouts for this school and now the project has been paused while the Government tries to unscramble the egg it dropped onto David and his Wok the Duck team.
“This is the second time in as many months that we’ve seen a Labor Minister with training wheels on make an utter mess of a key announcement.
“This is exactly the lack of consultation and secretive behaviour we’ve come to expect from this arrogant Government, but enough is enough.”
Mr Teague says David and his co-owners – daughter Ebony and son-in-law Daniel – have endured enormous impact on their operations since being blindsided by the compulsory acquisition order.
“This fiasco has robbed David and the team of hours and hours that they need to be running their small business,” he said.
“Please, Premier Malinauskas, let these hard-working small business owners know what you know in terms of other site options so they can have a fair shot at saving their restaurant.
“Sadly, this is what we’ve come to expect from the Malinauskas Labor Government. It rushes into planning decisions without showing due respect to hard-working South Australians. What a mess.”
