Labor must come clean on freight bypass

The Malinauskas Labor Government must end years of uncertainty by finally making a decision about the future of the long-awaited Greater Adelaide Freight Bypass.

During the 2025 Federal Election campaign, the State and Federal Liberals pledged a combined $1.05 billion to fully fund the project, but there has been no such commitment from  Labor.

State Liberal Leader Ashton Hurn said it is time for the Prime Minister and Premier to provide clarity on this project.

“There are countless businesses and residents who can’t make decisions about their future until they know what is happening with this proposal,” Mrs Hurn said.

“We would like to see works commence as soon as possible so that we can make our roads safer and keep South Australia moving.”

Shadow Minister for Regional Roads Sam Telfer said the project is critical for the long-term safety and productivity of South  Australia’s freight network.

“The Malinauskas government must finally come clean about where the bypass fits on its list of priorities,” Mr Telfer said.

“The Premier should be going into bat for South Australia and convincing his Labor colleagues in Canberra to do what is right for our state.

“Businesses and truck operators deserve certainty. The State Government needs to clearly state whether it supports this project or intends to walk away from it.”

Member for Heysen Josh Teague said the bypass would take trucks off  the South Eastern Freeway and make a real difference for Adelaide Hills families and commuters.

“For too long, Hills residents have lived with the daily impacts of heavy freight moving through local communities and down the freeway,” Mr Teague said.

“The Greater Adelaide Freight Bypass is a practical solution that would improve safety, reduce congestion and better connect freight movements across our state.

“Labor is asleep at the wheel when it comes to this project and the people impacted have had a gutful.”

The Greater Adelaide Freight Bypass would achieve the following:

  • Shift heavy freight off metropolitan roads, cutting truck traffic on corridors such as Cross and Portrush Roads

  • Take interstate trucks off the South Eastern Freeway descent, improving safety for Hills commuters

  • Create a dedicated freight link between the South Eastern Freeway and the Sturt Highway

  • Deliver the Truro township bypass, removing heavy vehicles from the main street

  • Duplicate  the Swanport Bridge to improve capacity, safety and network resilience

  • Reduce congestion and improve travel time for motorists and freight operators
